Catherine | Tuckahoe Plantation Portraits

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Catherine is one of the sweetest people I’ve photographed. She is a musician working for International Cooperating Ministries and uses her gifts and talents to serve the Lord – how cool is that?! Contacting me about some portraits, she told me about her most recent project. Catherine has been recording in Nashville, preparing for her upcoming EP, and I got to steal some time for a photo shoot! Some of my favorite photos are going to be used on her website and for the EP, so I can’t share those, but here is just a small taste of her session.

How beautiful is this girl?!

Kathryn Rubye | Newborn Session

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

Soon, I won’t be taking on any newborn or maternity clients, but before I move in that direction, I have one session to show [and two that are coming up in the next few months!]

Meet Kathryn Rubye. She was a stunner. This little girl has the brightest eyes, not to mention the sweetest parents. I arrived to their adorable old home in downtown Richmond and spent a little bit of time snapping shots of little Kate. Here is a small collection of favorites!

Constantino Family | Richmond Family Portraits

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

I know family photos can be stressful. Picking outfits, hoping the weather holds out and that the kids are in a good mood are just a few of the stressors. But, the results are so worth it. To have a memory of a family at a point in time is so special. The photos of everyone looking at the camera are necessary, and usually what people hang on the wall. But the fun photos with people being themselves and doing something. Those are my favorite. [Those are the photos hanging on MY walls.]

Meet the Constantino Family. I photographed Abby and Josh’s wedding a couple of years ago, and now they have baby Whit. Abby contacted me about taking advantage of my Fall Portrait Special. We picked a date and met a few days ago at The Mill at Fine Creek, one of my favorite wedding venues. After we about froze, we wrapped the shoot with so many great shots captured. The results are so sweet. Enjoy!

The Cutest of Clients

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

I never thought I’d be a school photographer. My memories of school photographers are cloudy. I hated sitting on that box, hoping I didn’t blink while I stare nervously into the camera lens. One shot. The same set up for each kid, unless you requested a colored gel over the lights. And the results? NEVER good. Maybe consistent, and usually not so bad, but never good.

I’ve been working with some child learning centers in Richmond to take school pictures of all of the kids. I was slightly nervous at the idea because of my experience [not to mention the reputation "school photographers" have], but these kids are really hard to take a bad photo of. Not only that, I’m doing the photos OUTSIDE with natural light. I’ve loved the experience – and although I’m still a wedding photographer, I love any opportunity to shoot something different from time to time. And these little kiddos are something special!

What Do I Do With My Hands?

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

Although I used the, “What do I do with my hands,” as a cute blog post title, it is actually a commonly stated concern for people when they are being photographed! Not only their hands, but, “Do you want me to smile?” “My hair is in my face; can I move it?” “What am I supposed to be thinking about?” “Do I look at the camera?”

As a photographer, my job is to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera. The poses, limb placement, facial expressions… all of these things will be addressed during the shoot. In this post I’ll give examples of ways I’ll be directing you, but I’ve gathered some fun ways for you to come into your shoot a little more comfortable as well! AND I’ve asked Jordan, a former bride [and my neighbor and lovely friend] to model for me to show examples, too! SO here we go!

If it bends, bend it. When you come into a shoot, don’t be afraid to put your hand on your waist. Pop a hip out. Reach up and grab your hair. Joints are so awesome and are meant to be used! Specifically, I’ll be directing you on what to put where especially if something isn’t working, but feel comfortable enough to at least move.

What DO I do with my hands? Here are a few options. Put your hands in your pockets. Place one hand on your waist. Run a hand through your hair. Have a hat or prop? Hold on to that! If you have a “tangable” environment, touch it! Grab a hold of your significant other. Hold THEIR hand. Wrap your hand around their neck.

Don’t forget about your shoulders. Put movement in your photos by moving. Shoulders are a great way to start, especially if you’re like most of the world and uncomfortable being photographed.

Now I bet you’re overwhelmed. There is so much to think about, but if you’re not a professional model, you really don’t have to think about any of this. Because lucky for you, if you’re being photographed, there is a photographer who knows what photographs well and is going to tell you what to do! The more comfortable you are in front of the camera, the less they’ll have to tell you. But no worries. Here are a few ways I’ll help you.

Do what I do. Sometimes, all the direction in the world can’t help a pose come to life unless the subject knows and SEE’S what you’re explaining. I’ll say, “Let’s try something like this.” Or, “Mirror me!” Usually it helps when the client sees what you’re doing. They can mirror you, and bam – they’ve connected with the feel and positioning of the pose and are able to mimic you.

Words, actions, and store references. This is usually really helpful with groups and couples. If things are getting a little repetitious, and I’m getting the same look over and over, I’ll try and give you something to DO! Usually it’s not the action I’m looking for, it’s the moment when you realize you feel silly and then laugh and smile. “Spin her around!” “Dip her!” “Walk away and look back at me.” “Run toward me!” “Tell her a secret.” Words and store references can help to. Rather than saying, “Be serious,” which usually makes people bust out laughing, say, “Give me J.Crew.” “Anthropologie.” “Give me, Proud. Silly. Romantic.” I’ll get a fun series that will loosen up the mood and let you get comfortable.

Pinterest. One of my most beneficial Pinterest boards I have is my Directing School board. I pin photos of poses that I love and are flattering, my style, and easy to work you into. Here are some examples with Jordan.

HOPEFULLY, this was helpful. What are your fears of being photographed?

Fall Portrait Special

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

Hi blog reader!

Yes you, the one who comments sometimes. And you who THINKS about commenting sometimes. I hope you’re doing well today! Did you know that Autumn is almost here? Yep. Time for Pumpkin Spice Lattes, boots, football, holidays… the summer has come and is headed toward the door. Did you know that this is one of the most popular times to get portraits done? I think it’s because of at least one of these reasons: you still have your summer tan, you wanted to wait until your hair doesn’t rebell against the humidity, you can’t wait to bust out those new boots, you need a photo for the Christmas card and you don’t want to wait until it’s below 40 to get your photo taken, and not to mention those beautiful leaves that are just about to pop into various reds, oranges and yellows…

Well, just in time for your portrait pleasure…

Here are some details.

If you live in Richmond, VA or surrounds, I would love to take your portraits this fall. I’m even going to include a DVD with high resolution images with a print release and a 16×20 Fine Art Print so you can fill in that empty space on your wall! So if it’s time for you do have some portraits done, as a family or a couple, or whatever, please shoot me an email!

Love,
Ali.

Brian + Marcy | Richmond Virginia Portraits

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

I microwaved Friday’s left over curried chicken. Chad might be upset when he gets home because the house will, yet again, smell like curry. Sitting on the couch under my fleece Redskins blanket, I went back and forth between blogging Marriage Monday or blogging Brian and Marcy. I think because I miss them already, I chose to blog the sweet couple.

Brian and Marcy are not engaged. In fact, their first date was right around the time Chad and I moved to Charlottesville which was almost one year ago. But this couple is one of my favorites. When Chad and I moved away to Richmond, we only had a few things holding us back from actually making that decision. Marcy and Brian were one of them. Marcy is a photographer, and Brian is a graphic designer/audio tech guy for Portico Church. They are intentional with each other, and I love to see the ways in which they encourage each other, build up one another, and stay spiritually connected. At the same time, they are SO able to joke around with each other. They make whatever room they’re in, funner [yes... funner].

I expressed the desire to want to practice posing and Marcy said she and Brian wanted some professional portraits together! So, the obvious was planned. They came over the other night to have dinner and allow me to shoot their portraits. Although, I didn’t have much to practice with because they are SO comfortable in front of the camera. You’ll see what I mean. They just WORKED it. B&M, miss y’all already!

I love it when guys know when things are being taken too seriously…BAHAHAHA. [Brian, don't hate me. This brings joy to my life...]

Marcy doesn’t have a “good side.” EVERY ANGLE is good.

As I was walking away, Brian decided to pick up Marcy and spin her around. I’m so glad I decided to snap these next two. The second one MIGHT become a canvas…

Jacqueline | Richmond Virginia Portraits

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

The girls I met at CDIA are such an encouragement. I don’t know how to appropriately express my love for them, how much I love their work, and how much I want to keep them in my pocket so that we can share jokes, photography stuff, and, because we’re girls, clothes. We’re so different in our styles, but I have such a deep appreciation and love for their work!

Jacqueline one of these ladies. She is a wedding photographer based in DC, getting ready to make a huge move with her husband across country in a few months. I had the huge honor of shooting her wedding [it was one of the most beautiful weddings I've been to; Style Me Pretty picked it up!], and when it came time for her to update her portraits on her website, we decided to swap sessions. We used Richmond as our backdrop, including Can Can, a little french cafe in Carytown. Be sure you check out her work. Not only her wedding portfolio, but also her travel and lifestyle work. Girl’s got skills.

*Just as a note, some of these are edited with VSCO Film Presets. I’m still playing around with them, but let me know what you think!*

I was so inspired by this Anthropologie skirt! Such great movement.

Had me at hello…

Sneak Peek | Jacqueline

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

We walked toward the woods to finish our last bit of shots in the golden light. At the sight and sound of them, we looked at each other and giggled, “The Hunger Games!” And then I shot this. And then I died. I can’t wait to show more of this fun tomorrow!
