The Cutest of Clients

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

I never thought I’d be a school photographer. My memories of school photographers are cloudy. I hated sitting on that box, hoping I didn’t blink while I stare nervously into the camera lens. One shot. The same set up for each kid, unless you requested a colored gel over the lights. And the results? NEVER good. Maybe consistent, and usually not so bad, but never good.

I’ve been working with some child learning centers in Richmond to take school pictures of all of the kids. I was slightly nervous at the idea because of my experience [not to mention the reputation "school photographers" have], but these kids are really hard to take a bad photo of. Not only that, I’m doing the photos OUTSIDE with natural light. I’ve loved the experience – and although I’m still a wedding photographer, I love any opportunity to shoot something different from time to time. And these little kiddos are something special!

I LOVE THESE PEOPLE!

I went to college with Tim and remember when he got engaged to Tori. After stalking their wedding photos, I couldn’t believe her BRIGHT blue eyes. I got to know both of them a lot better when they took me in for three weeks during my internship with Casey Templeton Photography. However, “my room” is now a nursery to their sweet little girl named Fiona. How adorable is she?!

All About the Eyes

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Most people would describe me as relaxed. A pretty calm easy going person. But, although I can take lots of stress, I’m actually a rule follower. I just love rules. I find them super freeing in some ways. They help me get through life. And I’m pretty similar when it comes to photography. There are so many rules when it comes to photography. And it is so hard for me to break them. Some are meant to be broken. I understand that as rule number 1. And I dabble in breaking them, but mostly, I’m thinking, “Rule of thirds. Balance. Correct exposure. Look for symmetry.” One of my biggest “MUSTS” are about the eyes. I have a pet peeve about focus. It has to be dead on. Jose Villa spoke about this. Totally shattered my world when he said one of his favorite images isn’t in focus. And it was on the cover of Southern Weddings. For me? Soft images are like nails on a chalk board for the most part. Here is my HUGE rule when it comes to portraits:

I shot a series of shallow depth of field portraits at Sarah and Ilya’s wedding. I nailed a few, but because I was shooting at 1.6, I was off in a few as well. I thought I’d use it as an example! Both of these images are usable in my opinion, but only one was delivered. Another photographer may enjoy this “mistake” and even consider it beautiful. For me, I need to see definition in the eyelashes, unless I’m TRYING to focus on something like… her necklace, or her earrings.

I really can’t wait to introduce you to these two. Ehem. Three…

Hayden made it into 75% of my pictures accidently. OHH puppies…

Brian + Marcy | Richmond Virginia Portraits

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

I microwaved Friday’s left over curried chicken. Chad might be upset when he gets home because the house will, yet again, smell like curry. Sitting on the couch under my fleece Redskins blanket, I went back and forth between blogging Marriage Monday or blogging Brian and Marcy. I think because I miss them already, I chose to blog the sweet couple.

Brian and Marcy are not engaged. In fact, their first date was right around the time Chad and I moved to Charlottesville which was almost one year ago. But this couple is one of my favorites. When Chad and I moved away to Richmond, we only had a few things holding us back from actually making that decision. Marcy and Brian were one of them. Marcy is a photographer, and Brian is a graphic designer/audio tech guy for Portico Church. They are intentional with each other, and I love to see the ways in which they encourage each other, build up one another, and stay spiritually connected. At the same time, they are SO able to joke around with each other. They make whatever room they’re in, funner [yes... funner].

I expressed the desire to want to practice posing and Marcy said she and Brian wanted some professional portraits together! So, the obvious was planned. They came over the other night to have dinner and allow me to shoot their portraits. Although, I didn’t have much to practice with because they are SO comfortable in front of the camera. You’ll see what I mean. They just WORKED it. B&M, miss y’all already!

I love it when guys know when things are being taken too seriously…BAHAHAHA. [Brian, don't hate me. This brings joy to my life...]

Marcy doesn’t have a “good side.” EVERY ANGLE is good.

As I was walking away, Brian decided to pick up Marcy and spin her around. I’m so glad I decided to snap these next two. The second one MIGHT become a canvas…

Sneak Peek | Jacqueline

We walked toward the woods to finish our last bit of shots in the golden light. At the sight and sound of them, we looked at each other and giggled, “The Hunger Games!” And then I shot this. And then I died. I can’t wait to show more of this fun tomorrow!
