Amelia + Aaron | Downtown Richmond Engagement

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Amelia and Aaron are my favorite. I knew this before I met them because I frequently told random people their story. And then I would cry. They have one of the best stories I’ve ever heard. Ever. Here it is in Amelia’s words right after they found out she was getting deployed:

I went home early, and Aaron and I started packing up. That was probably one the most emotionally draining weekends of my life. On top of that, we didn’t know if Aaron was going to deploy too, so there was the planning and contingency planning and back-up contingency planning that went along with that. I was set to fly out on Monday, and by Sunday afternoon, I had worked myself into a full on emotional wreck. There was no calmly asking Aaron over pizza if he really wanted to be with me. This time, it was Chinese food, and I was crying. He pulled me off the couch and into the big open space of our living room that I had never quite figured out what to do with. He made me close my eyes, and so there I was, just standing there in sweatpants, surrounded by boxes, and scary looking in the way one can only get from packing and crying and not sleeping for two days. And while I was standing there, feeling particularly ridiculous for getting so emotional, he had grabbed on one his name tapes out of our Army closet. He told me to open my eyes, and he was standing there holding his last name, and he said, “The only thing I have to give you is my name.” And he got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. I was crying, he was crying, the cat was staring at us like we had lost our mind…it was the best moment of my life.

I mean, COME ON! Anyway, Aaron and Amelia are perfect together. I actually didn’t direct them but a few times and when I did, I kind of messed up what they had going on! They are already legally married, but Amelia puts on a white dress and walks down the aisle next Thursday and I’m SO excited to get to capture their love and joy. And hang out with them some more.

One of my favorites. SUCH a great smile!

I love this… Aaron said her orange blazer kind of looked like it was out of thriller. Got jokes… Amelia, you look hot. The end.

Alex + Ashleigh | Ellanor Lawrence Park Engagement Session

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Alex and I knew each other when we were younger. We haven’t really talked since high school, but I was so excited to receive an email from him telling me that he was engaged to a girl named Ashleigh and looking for a wedding photographer! We met up in Charlottesville and talked about their wedding, which, by the way, is going to be so beautiful. I’m so excited about it, especially after meeting and spending time with Ashleigh. She is SO gorgeous, and these two are so cute together. They are such great complements to one another. Thanks for hanging with me yesterday, y’all! Hopefully you guys didn’t get any ticks when I made you crawl threw the tall grass!

I love that necklace! A gift from Alex… so good!

Those eyes. I love this photo.

And I love these too.

Nikki + Corey | Charlottesville Engagement

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Although I’ve been in Charlottesville since May, I’ve not had but a hand full of shoots here. It takes time to let people know I’m here! Nikki and Corey are getting married in Fredericksburg next year, but were excited to come to Charlottesville for their engagement session for “something different. We drove around looking for parks with parking and water. The water was the tricky one. I spent time on google maps looking for little blue dots and lines representing rivers and ponds. It was great to get out and explore my still-new city! Anyway, Nikki and Corey arrived and off we went to the locations I had scouted out. Nikki and Corey are so fun together. They have a child-like, playful kind of love. They make each other laugh, and are clearly so right for each other. Enjoy these images!!

PRETTY. Both of you. I can see those bright green eyes from here.

Halley + Kevin | Old Town Alexandria Engagement

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

We planned to meet for a client meeting. Halley had the BRILLIANT idea to do not only a client meeting, but also an engagement session. It had snowed the day before. Using the Starbucks on Union and King as our warm retreat, we strolled around Alexandria and chatted, shot, got to know one another… and shivered! Kevin and Halley met each other through a mutual friend from their Florida university. They hit it off, and now here they are planning a Charlottesville wedding! Congrats on your engagement, you two!

Diana + Stephen | Horse Country Engagement

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Get ready for this one, readers. It might get emotional. And I have way too many images, but I really had trouble narrowing it down!

Diana is my childhood best friend. We grew up riding together. We had sleep overs and talked about boys. We sang to the Grease soundtrack and Michael Jackson cd’s using her bed as a stage. I helped her paint her room powder pink and baby blue. The other day we talked on the phone for 2 hours. We talked about commitment in relationship and what it looks like. Knowing we’ve not been through a long marriage, but knowing we’re committed. I realized that we’d changed. We were no longer in high school, or middle school for that. I’m so thrilled she met a guy who can complement her spunk and silliness but at the same time meet her at a place of commitment and depth. SO excited for Diana and Stephen’s wedding next year! By the way, HUGE thanks to Cyndi at Salon Emage Day Spa for the make up and hair on Diana. SO beautiful!

We started in Middleburg. FIRST frame. YES.

After Middleburg, we stopped by the barn to say hello to Bittersweet.

Then headed out to the battlefield with Gizmo and Asta.

Check out those shoes. Heck yes.

FAVORITE.

The bling.

Love you guys! I had so much fun with you!

Come Rain or Shine

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Chad got home at 4. “Are you ready?” I had my retainer in still… “Give me 10 minutes.” I was trying to get a blog post done, but I put it off until Monday. I packed a suitcase with both my clothes and his [one of the benefits of being married...one bag!] . We hopped into his car and took off toward the coast. “Is she going to say Yes?” I kept asking Chad. And we would discuss why we thought it was probable.

After a delicious meal at Olive Garden with Chad’s family, we came home. Chad got a call at 11pm that night. I heard him say, “Are you ready?” Or “Are you nervous?” It was one of those. I imagine Bobby had some nerves… we fell asleep and waited for 2 pm the next day.

We drove down to the local state park where Bobby and Trish had started their relationship 3 years ago to the day. Bobby, Abby [Trish's sister], and Nate were sitting around the car when we pulled up. “Should we do this?” “I guess so.” And off we went to set up.

It was a beautiful day. A little nippy, some big poofy clouds, but otherwise, beautiful. Abby and I combined forces to set up the table while the guys looked for power for some lights. Once we were finished, it was time to wait. Bobby left to go shower and change. Chad and Nate left to get everyone Subway. Abby and I guarded the pretty table. I think we had the best job because we got to tell all of the beach combers, “There is a proposal tonight.” And we would get really excited reactions.

Soon after the guys left to get Subway, it started to look a little… iffy. Still beautiful, but there was a lack of blue sky. And the wind was a little crazy. When it started to sprinkle, we packed up the boom box and the lights and headed over to the camp ground showers to take cover. In rained. It never stopped raining. Would the plans change?

Little did we know that Bobby and Trish had parked their car and were walking along the beach. After all, this was their anniversary. The guys got back with the food, dropped it off for Bobby and Trish at their table and ran back. We ate subway in our cars, and Trish and Bobby ate theirs in the rain, sitting at a wet table with a wet blanket to keep them warm. They danced to the song they danced to the night they started dating. But then Bobby did something different. He dropped to one knee. And between manual focus and a few clicks, I remember hearing was, “Are you serious?” And through the rain, saw a big smile. On both of their faces.

Shameless photo of my husband. [I love you!!]

I was checking out angles to capture the proposal. Abby is pretending to be Trish.

The one little spot of light…

I am so happy for you guys. Thanks for letting us be a part of this “perfect” plan. I can’t wait to see you guys be MARRIED!!

Amanda + Diron | Richmond Engagement Session

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Where should I begin? First, I suppose I’ll shake hands with Amanda, congratulating her on a Cowboy’s victory over the Redskins. [We'll get you next time.]

Diron and Amanda were friends. They served together with Intervarsity. They enjoyed football together. They enjoyed a mug of beer together. They were friends. But I’m not sure either of them were 100% ok with the results of the DTR meeting :) Because after graduation, I got wind that they were not just friends. They were DATING! Then, soon after, Chad was talking to Diron and he casually started talking about a ring. He was 100% confident, and I loved that. I love these photos because I not only see happiness, but I see history. I see a relationship that grew out of a friendship into romantic feelings into commitment. I’m excited they’ve had the opportunities to hang out. Serve with one another. Love the Lord and seek him about one another. I love you guys together!

Amanda, you have the cutest scrunched nose laugh ever!

Cheka + Michael | Washington DC Engagement Party

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

I met Cheka and Michael outside the Ronald Reagan Building on the corner of 13th and Penn. I had to follow my google maps and ask a few security guards to point me in the right direction. [I'm so not a city girl.] I knew I’d be looking for a girl in a party dress, and as Cheka and Michael casually walked up, looking so chic, I knew we’d be having a wonderful night! We snapped some portraits, and then the party started! I cannot thank A Gioia Event enough for their amazing work in planning and coordinating the party. The details were phenomenal, and the service was top notch. Enjoy some views from this Capitol event.

Claudia + TR | Harper’s Ferry West Virginia Engagement

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I drove north to Harper’s Ferry to meet Claudia and TR for engagement photos. I think I might have been to Harper’s Ferry a long long time ago? Maybe? I definitely don’t remember it being this stinking cute! Everywhere you turn there is something to take a photo of. Thanks for suggesting the location, Claudia! We spent some time wandering around, shooting here, shooting there. It was a very relaxing time with the two of them. Their October wedding is sure to be a blast!

The definition of blue eyes. Yep. Gorgeous.

Sam + Jordan | Harrisonburg Virginia Engagement

Friday, August 26th, 2011

They met in the library. Sam asked Jordan a question about the computers. He knew the answer, but he needed an excuse to talk to her. Then he said she looked familiar, “Are you in intervarsity?” he asked. He knew she was. He had seen her before. Many times. Jordan had his attention long before she realized. Sam and Jordan’s relationship started and grew at JMU, which means when they told me they wanted to shoot on campus, I was SO excited. We spent most of our night out on the quad. A typical JMU activity even if you AREN’T taking engagement photos. We had the entire quad to ourselves. No students, bikers, or ultimate frisbee players, just light. Beautiful golden light. I can’t wait until their wedding! J-M-U… Duuuuukes…

I call this my earthquake picture because I was editing this when the ground began to twitch.

Uh oh… the KISSING ROCK :)
