Marriage Monday | Funny Gifts

Monday, July 30th, 2012

If this post a little off at times, it’s because I’m writing while watching Cross Country. This is where they take horses and jump them through ponds and over trucks at 20 mph. Needless to say, I’m a little distracted :)

I was thinking about something I’ve been super thankful for recently. It’s something that I imagine a lot of girls might be turned off by. Have you ever been given a gift that was, well, questionable? Like, a husband buying his wife a tent for camping. Or pulling a Father of the Bride and buying your fiance a blender for her wedding present. “What is this, 1958? Give the little wife a blender?”

For my birthday this year, Chad was excited, but hesitant to give me my present. It was an, “I think you’ll like it,” type gift. But, I LOVED it. I was SO excited. It was a check to join a gym for 6 months. YES!! I was stoked. I love spin classes and need accountability when I’m working out, so a gym membership was perfect. The only drawback is that I felt guilty. I have a fabulous gym in our apartment complex. So I asked Chad if I could use the money for a personal trainer instead. So, every Thursday, I meet with a trainer. He holds me accountable to 300 calorie meals and working out EVERYday except wedding days. I’ve left behind excuses like, “I don’t have time,” because I now MAKE time. I’m learning how to manage my life, instead of having my life manage me. I’m pushing around priorities, and it’s hard, but so worth it.

Have you ever been given a gift from your spouse or significant other that you LOVED? Or a gift that had a question mark hanging over it?

The VA Beach Sessions

Friday, July 27th, 2012

I’m so excited because in just a few weeks, I’ll be in VA Beach for a few days and I’ll be available for a few portrait sessions. The main points are below, but here are a few more details.

Lets put something out there that should be obvious by now. I LOVE THE BEACH. And. I LOVE PORTRAITS. So, during my weekend off of weddings, I’ll be offering portrait sessions down on the sand and salt water. These can be any type of portrait session – engagement, family, senior – any kind you can think of! I’ll only be holding three, so if you’re interested, lets get something on the books! August 10, I’m available either for a sunrise session or a sunset session. August 11, same. And August 12, I only have a sunrise session available. Again, I’m only booking three total, book now!

The Farmer’s Market

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

There are only a few places that I go that I feel the need to stay a long time. I’m a quick decision maker, but when it comes to the farmer’s market, no matter what is in my reusable grocery bag, I still can walk in circles. I’ve never left without feeling like I was being rushed, or that I hadn’t gotten my fill. I think it’s the people. The bright colors. The smells of melons and flowers and kettle corn. The feeling of love from the sellers – after all, these are their products that they grew! It is very different than to produce section at the grocery store.

Anyway, this past weekend I was home. Woodbridge doesn’t have the best farmer’s market I’ve ever been to, but it has definitely grown from a 5 truck show. My mom and I spoke with a man who was buying flowers for the butterflies. Then he launched in to a story about squirrel hunting and how he had seen a squirrel and a rabbit playing together. We spoke to a man who made bread. 1000 loaves of rosemary focaccia per week. I bought 4 of them. I found out that a boy in my french class in high school now works with his family making pastries for the market – amazing!

Anyway, am I alone here? Why do you love the farmer’s market?

The Weight of What I Do

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

I found a place to park. It was on the street so that I wouldn’t take up any of the close spots. The neighborhood children were bouncing basketballs and riding scooters. I got out of my car and took a deep breath. Wrapping my arms around two 8×10 framed images, tied up with tape and brown packaging paper. I knocked on the door, but it was already open. I took another deep breath and walked into a friend’s home. The family, about 12 or 15 of them, was sitting around in a circle with puffy eyes, some quietly crying, some soothing those crying. Others were in the kitchen enjoying some finger foods and a ham. I sat down with the group in the living room as someone reach for a pile of pictures. There must have been 1000 of them. We split up the pile and passed it around, each person getting a stack of floppy 4×6′s. How did I find myself here?

I guess it started when I was at CDIA. Our final class was called Practicum. Basically, take your knowledge of digital imagery and multi-media and pair up with a non profit to create something that would help them. Long story short, I was paired with Teardrops to Rainbows, a local organization that provides financial support to families who have one or more children with cancer. You see, when a child gets cancer, one parent of a two parent home has to stop working for the frequency of hospital visits, and with the addition of hospital bills…well… you see where this is going. And imagine a single parent home!

One of the families was the family of Sey-J. I photographed Sey-J, who was in remission at the time. Spending an entire day with him at camp, I watched him run around, play sports, fish, play with his daddy and brother… A few weeks later I found out that Sey-J relapsed. A few months later, my dad called me to let me know that he had passed. I only knew him for a day, but I cried. And sitting around that family room with photos of Sey-J being passed round, I realized the weight of what I do.

Laura + Pete | A Downtown Charlottesville Wedding

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

When I walked into the hotel room, it was spotless. No sign of a wedding except for a beautiful white dress hanging on the door and a bottle of champagne chilling in a metal ice bucket. Laura must have heard the door open because she came around to corner of the attached room. She had her hair and make-up done, and she was wearing a “Bride” shirt and a huge smile. “I cleaned up the room a little, and moved all of our stuff into the bedroom.” I loved her during our engagement session, and I loved her more now.

Her and Pete are a super fun couple. I guess that’s what you get when you combine a VaTech and JMU grad. They married at Laura’s mother’s church and headed back to the Omni for their reception. It was a night of connecting with friends from the past and celebrating a new future. I got to work with some fabulous vendors, and Marcy of Marcy May Photography came along as my second! It was a blast!

Reception: Omni Hotel
DJ: Allison Kinney, allisonmariekinney@gmail.com
Hair/Makeup: Bristles
Cake: Chandler’s Bakery
Dress: Church Street Bridal, Atelier Diagonal
Bridesmaids: Rosalin’s Bridal, Bill Levkoff

AHH! I love this shot. You can see the storm clouds rolling on in… Laura, you’re so stunning!

The Omni has glass elevators, and after their rose-petal getaway, I grabbed some shots of the couple inside the elevator as they went up. It was SUPER dark, and the flash reflected off of the glass, so I had to turn it off. I’m so please with the effect of using available light! You can see the onlookers, the trees from the Omni gardens, and the couple as they go up. Congrats you two!!!!

Marriage Monday | One Flesh

Monday, July 16th, 2012

This weekend was really hard. Because when you start your day praying for things you usually don’t pray for, I find you’re usually just spiritually preparing yourself. Saturday morning, I prayed for my couple, like usual. I prayed that their marriage would be amazing, that the rain would hold off, and that they would enjoy the day immensely. But then I started praying for myself. I prayed for creativity in difficult times, that my equipment would hold up, and that I would respect the sovereignty of God through it all. That was unusual.

Well, Saturday was beautiful. The weather held off, and Laura and Pete had a beautiful wedding that I’m so excited to share with you tomorrow. But for me, I had a lot of challenges. I dealt with STRICT church restrictions, camera malfunctions, and questioning God. [Something like, "God! What the heck?!" I hope he understands I wasn't trying to be rude, just flipping out a little.] The blessing was that I have a back up camera! The ceremony was beautiful! And, God is STILL sovereign.

And Sunday, I cried at church. You see, Sunday they started talking about marriage/divorce/adultery and what the bible says about that. It was a doozy. The pastor broke down, the church was silenced, and I started to cry. If you follow my Marriage Monday series, you know how passionate I am about healthy marriages. I LOVE marriage. Not just my own, but the weight of the relationship. The importance of it. The COVENANT of it. I love that God enters into marriage with us. You know, “What God has joined together…” It broke me to think about broken marriages and the tragic loss of a life, the life of ONE FLESH.

One flesh. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife and the two will become…

There is a new life when two people get married. Their life together! Our pastor explained it as a child. You can’t take the mom out of a child, or the dad out of a child. He is one flesh–one life. That is how God sees marriage. This fact is slowly sinking in. I hurt when Chad hurts. We start to think the same thoughts. We understand more and more of each other. It’s not boring; its bizarre. It’s one of those things that you don’t understand until it starts happening. And then you don’t believe it because it’s weird. Wonderful. But weird.

When Chad held my hand while we prayed for Saturday’s wedding, I knew he was entering into “it” with me. We were acting as one, together. Asking God for the same things. And it was weird. But wonderful.

Southern Link Love

Friday, July 13th, 2012

I found it when my mom and I took our first trip to Charleston. Peace. Culture. Sweet Tea. History. Charm. And a mellow lifestyle. Just search Charleston on my blog and you’ll see my obsession with that city. Really the south in general. I love all of the cities I’ve visited. Small and big. I want to share my love for all things southern with a few links. There are such fun things that have come out of the south, so enjoy some of my favorites.

All About the Eyes

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Most people would describe me as relaxed. A pretty calm easy going person. But, although I can take lots of stress, I’m actually a rule follower. I just love rules. I find them super freeing in some ways. They help me get through life. And I’m pretty similar when it comes to photography. There are so many rules when it comes to photography. And it is so hard for me to break them. Some are meant to be broken. I understand that as rule number 1. And I dabble in breaking them, but mostly, I’m thinking, “Rule of thirds. Balance. Correct exposure. Look for symmetry.” One of my biggest “MUSTS” are about the eyes. I have a pet peeve about focus. It has to be dead on. Jose Villa spoke about this. Totally shattered my world when he said one of his favorite images isn’t in focus. And it was on the cover of Southern Weddings. For me? Soft images are like nails on a chalk board for the most part. Here is my HUGE rule when it comes to portraits:

I shot a series of shallow depth of field portraits at Sarah and Ilya’s wedding. I nailed a few, but because I was shooting at 1.6, I was off in a few as well. I thought I’d use it as an example! Both of these images are usable in my opinion, but only one was delivered. Another photographer may enjoy this “mistake” and even consider it beautiful. For me, I need to see definition in the eyelashes, unless I’m TRYING to focus on something like… her necklace, or her earrings.

Trish + Bobby | Chesapeake Virginia Wedding

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

I am married to Chad thanks to Bobby. Chad told me that Bobby had to approve of me, and lucky for me he did, but the whole idea made me nervous. Chad and Bobby’s friendship can be described as deep, orchestrated by the Lord, and forever. They are best friends, and when Trish came along, Chad definitely approved. Although they had the “go-ahead,” these two took their time with their friendship, their dating, and with the decision to get engaged. But their wedding, like their relationship, was a celebration of God’s faithfulness. It was a family affair. It was another HOT day, 107 or something crazy, but we rocked it out. Everyone cried. And now? Trish and Bobby are [finally] married.

One of my favorite parts of the day was when one of the best men handed Trish the spare key to Bobby’s house and said, “I had this key so that I could come over when I wanted to. Now I come over when you say it’s ok.” SUCH a sweet moment.

Sarah + Ilya | King Family Vineyard Wedding

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

The power was out all across the region after those storms. I arrived at The Boar’s Head where Sarah would be getting ready and was informed that the Chapel had no power and that there were two trees down blocking the road on the way to King Family Vineyard. But Sarah handled the situation so well – she didn’t even seem worried. And Ilya? Mainly worried about memorizing his vows. The day went brilliantly. Even with power outages and 100 degree chapels and downed trees, Sarah and Ilya were married and celebrated in style. The King Family Vineyard was as beautiful as I’ve ever seen it. The night stayed clear, and my second shooter, Abby, and I had a great time shooting this awesome event. Thanks to the wonderful vendors who rocked out this event:
