A Silent Auction

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

I walked over to pick up a package from the office of our apartment and I decided to take the short cut through the pool. I reached down to feel the water. Cold, as usual. I stood up and aimed my gaze to the door of the office, but there was something in the way. Furniture. Tons of it. Two round kitchen tables, a set of 8 beautiful chairs, bar stools, a huge coffee table, two consoles, and a BIG fat mirror. Plus some other stuff. I walked over and started looking. It was all up for auction. $70 for a pottery barn style console. $80 for a mirror. WHAT!?!? I put some bids down and went to get my packages. I found out that the office, after redecorating, would be throwing away all of the furniture if it didn’t find a home!

The next day I brought our new neighbor Jordan over to take a look. She bid on some lamps. I spoke with Brina in the office and she said they’d be closing it at 3pm. We’ll it was 2:30 and Jordan convinced me to camp out and stalk the “up” bids. In the end, I landed my 5 ft. mirror I’ve always wanted [vain, I know, but I love huge clunky mirrors!!], a china cabinet, and [Chad's pick] the pottery barn style console.

Do we have room for this stuff? Not really. Are we making it work? YES! Check it out:

I love the leather inlay that looks a little worn.

I love displaying my fan that has been sitting in the corner of our room with no place to go.

The black box is our wedding album.

This mirror is too big for pictures. But, here is an idea of the frame. What would YOU do with a 5′ mirror??

Brouck + Matthew | Washington DC Wedding

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

This past weekend was so fun. It was MEMORIAL DAY! I love Memorial Day around the district because of one thing. ROLLING THUNDER. Hundreds of thousands of motorcycles rally together at the Pentagon, and then, one by one, roll around the district making as much noise as they can to remind everyone of the sacrifices made to protect America’s freedom. Gives me chills.

BUT before that, I photographed Brouck’s wedding! Whew. I’m loving this wedding season so far. Their’s was traditional, yet personal. Brouck and Matthew are so laid back, but so organized. It was a fun event to be a part of. This couple hired me over email, so we hadn’t even met! I arrived at Brouck’s house 30 minutes early and photographed her sweet details. I met her family–so hospitable! I think I was offered a drink about 5 times. Once Brouck arrived, the day was put into action and never slowed down!

One of the most telling photos of the day. All of her bridesmaids chipped in and literally lent a hand. This was such a supportive cast.

Brouck, you are so adorable in this photo.

After the wedding, we went to Upper Senate Park for a few portraits. We had to dodge about 18 wedding parties, but managed to find a secluded section of the park where there wasn’t another bride :) Brouck and Matthew ROCKED their portraits.

I’ll end with my FAVORITE shot of the day. Gorgeous, Brouck! Seriously!

My Best Friend’s Wedding Shower

Friday, May 25th, 2012

How can I explain Diana… Fun. Spunky. Lover of all things pink. We grew up best friends. Singing Grease and Michael Jackson in her powder pink room we painted together. She asked me to shoot her wedding, and I’m so excited. September is going to be good.

Diana’s bridesmaids threw her the most perfect Garden Party Shower ever. Under the afternoon sun, we celebrated Diana’s fall wedding, showering her with make your own mimosa’s, gluten free strawberry short cake, and tons of bite size goodies to nibble on. Oh. And lots of wine, gifts, and a hot pink KitchenAid.

Diana and her Momma!

PURE JOY. A hot pink KitchenAid. Every girl’s dream.

JoAnna + Kevin | Backyard Maryland Wedding

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

At some point during the evening, I think Jack Johnson was playing and the light was perfect and the smell of BBQ was in the air swirling around with the sounds of laughter and celebration… I just had to smile and say to myself, “This is how it should be.”

JoAnna and Kevin contacted me from my feature on Style Me Pretty. I was so excited to get their email, especially when hearing that they would be renting out a CAMP for their wedding weekend. Later, however, JoAnna called to let me know they’d had a change of heart. They wanted a small venue: their home. With people they loved: close friends and family. Engaged for about two years, JoAnna and Kevin collected little pieces for their wedding. Each plate and glass was collected individually. Everything was personalized. A backyard BBQ was exactly what they wanted. And THAT’s how it should be.

JoAnna and Kevin, your wedding was a dream. Your family is amazing, and your friends are so fun and lovable. Everything about your wedding made me full of joy. Enjoy your honeymoon–love you guys!

After this wedding, I officially want a pair of Jack Rogers. How cute are these monogramed shoes?!?

Their house was the perfect mix between Pottery Barn, and Shabby Chic.

Rachael second shot for me. How cute is this shot of JoAnna she captured on the left? All smiles…

Marriage Monday | A Non-Wedding Post

Monday, May 21st, 2012

One of the most common “tips” for a good marriage is, “Take some time each day to reconnect.” It’s a really great idea, it works, and it is just needed. You have to create a space for intimacy if you desire it. You can’t just expect it to happen. As I get back in to wedding season, I realize I have only about 6 weekends from now until Novermber so I’m trying my best to really connect with Chad–giving him the time and space we both want and need together. In the same sense, I’ve been sharing a ton of wedding and engagement posts. And I love those! The winter was long, and I’m so ready for this wedding season! But in posting only weddings, I’ve been feeling disconnected from you readers! So, let me share a few personal tidbits with y’all!

315
This one is business related. But I’m so excited I can’t stand it. Just this past week, I hired a designer to help me design a custom website and a mini rebrand! After emailing around, I was referred to 315 Design by a few photographers. The whole process will be complete by the end of the year, so you’ll be hearing about that more!

Corn & Black Bean Salsa
I celebrated a friend’s birthday a few months ago, and one of the dishes was yummy, super easy to make Corn and Black Bean Salsa. I don’t remember what they put in it, so I’ve been making up my own little version. You can eat it with chips, on tacos, make quesadillas… endless options :) Here it is:

1 can of yellow corn [or off the cob now that it's getting into season]
1 can of black beans
1 lime, juice
salt + pepper to taste
cilantro to taste

MIX IT ALL UP and that’s it!

National Harbor
After this weekend’s Baltimore wedding, I got back to my phone and saw two messages from my mom. She had been invited to spend the evening at National Harbor in a suite after attending the 100 Year Celebration of Naval/Marine Aviation with my grandfather, a Marine fighter pilot. WHICH MEANS, I would be staying with her! As an only child, time with my momma is so special to me. Not to mention getting to see my grandpa! The Gaylord is a bit like The Truman Show…really small enclosed village, but so elegant and shmancy. We had a blast, giggled and slept in our king size bed.

Sandbridge
I’ve been preparing since LAST year’s trip. Our family, who has rarely gotten ourselves together to… get together, is going to the beach ALL TOGETHER for the second year in a row and it’s coming up in ONE MONTH!!! Chad and I are so excited for it. I’m already preparing for the beach, the sand, the food, the photo sessions, the late night Beatles sing-alongs… What do you guys do on your family vacations??

Alex + Ashleigh | Ellanor Lawrence Park Engagement Session

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Alex and I knew each other when we were younger. We haven’t really talked since high school, but I was so excited to receive an email from him telling me that he was engaged to a girl named Ashleigh and looking for a wedding photographer! We met up in Charlottesville and talked about their wedding, which, by the way, is going to be so beautiful. I’m so excited about it, especially after meeting and spending time with Ashleigh. She is SO gorgeous, and these two are so cute together. They are such great complements to one another. Thanks for hanging with me yesterday, y’all! Hopefully you guys didn’t get any ticks when I made you crawl threw the tall grass!

I love that necklace! A gift from Alex… so good!

Those eyes. I love this photo.

And I love these too.

Jordan + Sam | Coastal Maryland Wedding

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

It had been a long time since their run in at the Library at JMU. Jordan and Sam dated, prepared for marriage, and this past Saturday the day had finally come. “Eeee!” Jordan squealed as she turned and saw herself in the mirror. She had been up since O’dark thirty for her salon appointment, and the process of becoming a bride was complete. She put the finishing touches. Bracelet. Necklace. Earrings. And then she made her way down to meet her groom.

They wed next to the Bay under the sun. My favorite part of the day, besides the 100s of Kerr Jars [not Mason; Sam's last name is Kerr] and purple DIY pom-poms that her housemates surprised her with, was the look of comfort and joy on their faces. The week before their wedding, they were moving out of 4 different cities into a fifth, Jordan graduated from College, Sam finished at WVU and starts an internship, AND not to mention preparing for their wedding. Their wedding day may have been the most relaxing day they’d seen in weeks. Now they’re married, and somewhere south and in the sun lounging for a week. Congrats you guys!

LOVED this light! Look at Jordan’s sepia eyes… So stunning.

THE BOW TIES! And how awesome is this DIY Lemonade! Just add water…

I could have NEVER done this without my 2nd, Sarah. Thanks for catching all those little ladybugs for me!!

Jordan, you are so beautiful!!!

Location | Engagement Shoot Style

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

I just want to throw this out there. Into the mix of really good advice when it comes to engagement shoot locations. I’m not saying this is really good advice, but I just want to mix it in with the rest. There are a few things that really MAKE your engagement shoot, and I want to focus on LOCATION.

I see so many fields. Grassy, hilly, country fields. And I love them. For real. I grew up riding horses. Open fields are in my blood. But are YOU a couple who wants their shoot to be in a grassy field? Or were you not able to think of any other option and figured the photos would be pretty? I’m here to bring you a few off the beaten path engagement shoot location ideas to hopefully spark your creativity when choosing a location.

Things to think about when it comes to location:

1. What do we like to do together?
Cook? Go out to eat? Why not do that for your session? Or have it in a kitchen where you’re making something together. Sing? Are you musicians? Think about asking your favorite venue if they’d let you in and turn on the stage lights. Read? Snuggle up with a good book? There are plenty of cafe’s or book stores that would love to open their doors for you.

2. Check your PDA levels.
One of my main goals is to get some relaxed, romantic, real images. Are you a couple that can be romantic and “into each other” with other people around? Or do you want a nice quiet little spot? When I ask you if you can kiss each other or whisper into each his/her ear, will you be feel comfortable doing so?

3. WHY are you choosing the location?
Is it because it represents you? Does it hold a special place in your life? Did you meet there? Is it where he proposed? Try not to land on a place because you can’t think of anywhere else…

I went out a few days ago and drove around, snapping a few “engagement shots” without a couple, and with a point and shoot. I love to have suggestions to tell people when they ask, “where should we go?” As much as I want my clients to choose their own location, sometimes it helps to have ideas thrown at you! Here are a few of my own:

Ball Park //  Loves sports. Competitive couple. Met during intermurals in college. Plays softball. All American.

Nursery // Going green. Love gardening and growing. Met at the farmer’s market. Loves the spring time. Big on flowers.

Urban Landscape // City people. Met in the club. Up for the unexpected. Love an urban feel.

Acoustic Remedy

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

“I put an offer on baby Clair and they accepted it.”  An 11 word email, and my dad added another guitar to his collection. A few months ago, my dad asked me to come and photograph the cases for Acoustic Remedy, a Wisconson based company that specializes in free-standing instrument displays that incorporates humidity control as it’s primary function. Amazing. I also got a few close ups of my dad’s collection.

Well he’s hollow in the middle from the shape that he’s in.
He’s either filled up with music or locked in his shell again.
And it takes some fine tuning to make him come around,
But he’s a huge piece of me, and I’ll never put him down.

Marriage Monday | The Irreplaceable Role

Monday, May 7th, 2012

What is the irreplaceable role you long to play?

In 2009, I sat in a room full of women and contemplated this question. We were reading Captivating together, a book that addresses the desires of women from a deep soul level: the desire to be irreplaceable.

Here was my answer:

Most of the time women are told to bury their desires like this.  We watch the Notebook and LONG to be Ally–to have two guys madly in love with you, to live this beautiful life, to be caught in this “beautiful dilemma.” We find ourselves wanting to make out with this passion charged man who doesn’t care if you’re engaged or not, etc etc…

This kind of desire, I can only imagine, would really wreck a husband inside and out, not to mention how this sin would affect the wife!  But the truth and reality and the NOT so sinful foundation is this longing to be desired and irreplaceable.  Or this desire to be wanted and have a purpose in life.  This may be true for guys too, but particularly for girls, its a romantic thing!  We want to be wanted.  We can only hope that there is something about ourselves that is unique and totally our own.  God has made us his child.  Christ is MY BRIDEGROOM.  We are created and treasured by the One True God and he knows our name!  We have a place in his kingdom.  We have a role in his plan.  And I DO really long to be part of it.

But to address the question on a human relationship level. This might be true to everyone, but I’m glad I can put my own words to it.  I hate to do this, but I’m going to give the synopsis of Braveheart.  So William Wallace’s girl.  I think her name is Lily.  Anyway, they fall in love, she dies, and he holds onto her handkerchief. He then tries to ignite his people with a longing for freedom.  So, he goes to battle and fights for it, freedom that is.  The more he fights and develops his belief in freedom, the more radical he gets and dangerous his mission becomes.  Anyway, he dies fighting for what he believes, all the while holding onto Lily’s handkerchief.  And what I see as my role is to be that handkerchief.

I want to be held onto, and not be the REASON for the fighting, but to be held THROUGH the fight.  I want to be number two, only to something greater than me.  Of course, all the while in a great adventure of my own with God–with Christ.  I want to be that side story in the ultimate story.  Yes I want to be pursued, and want to be loved, etc, but OH! to be held so close to someone that I am soaked in the sweat of a servant along with the blood of a Savior…  I do know that this isn’t as easy as just being “held.”  Its not as easy as my bold and blanket statements seem.  I’m going to not “feel” like it, or not want to, or say something rude–its not all smiles and laughter.  But over all, to my husband, that is what I want to be.

I emailed that to Chad a few days later and we talked about it. To this day, we still talk about it. We both see it as a defining point in out relationship, even thought it was just a question in a women’s bible study. What is your irreplaceable role?
