Ride Along

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Q: What is the best Valentine’s Day gift a father could give a newly married couple?

A: THE RICHARD PETTY RIDE ALONG EXPERIENCE!!!

My head popped off the pillow, I curled my hair, put on make up, and tapped my foot as Chad was putting his shoes on 5 minutes after we were going to be in the car. Why was I so excited? Um, I don’t know, maybe because 170 mph, the feeling of no-gravity, acceleration on 24 degree banks, acceleration, the smell of exhaust and rubber, and the phrase, “Gentlemen! Start your engines!” were all just a short 1.5 hour drive away! It was our last weekend in Winston Salem, and we were gonna go on a date. I’m not the biggest NASCAR fan in the world, but you don’t really have to be to enjoy this kind of thing. If you ever are near a track, check it out. It will get your heart racing a little…

Anyway, the date finished with a delicious lunch at the one and only Olive Garden, and a trip to the movies to see Fast Five [I mean, what else were you expecting?!?!]

I feel the need… the need. for speed.

Look at those cars! So fast…

Hannah + Coleman | Central Virginia Wedding

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

First, I want to give a HUGE “Hello, Thank you, and we miss you” to Coleman’s brother who is serving our country.

On Saturday, I witnessed one of the most beautiful events I’ve been to. Hannah and Coleman’s wedding day was full of joy, laughter, and sunshine; the combination of which is unstoppable. I know Hannah from my time at JMU. We immediately bonded as introverts and lovers of NCIS. Hannah is the kind of girl you want to be like–confident, beautiful [just wait until you see that smile...], keeps a clean house [I know; I lived with her], and loves the color pink. A storybook kind of girl. Coleman and her have dated for seven years, spending the last four years apart at different colleges [Coleman is a VMI graduate; Hannah a JMU grad]. They have a laid-back kind of love; I hope you’re able to feel it…

Hannah isn’t the only one who has some bling. Check out this VMI ring…

Hannah’s four brothers took turns walking her down the aisle and giving her away. It was so special and sweet.

Boston University | Center for the Digital Imaging Arts

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Don’t get me wrong. I loved my job at James Madison University. But I took that job in admissions having no idea what I wanted to do with my life. And yes. It was fun. I got to travel to New England during the fall. I met some amazing high schoolers with big dreams. Saw Boston. Harvard. But my heart was somewhere else. I just had to find out where.

You’re already doing it.

That was the answer to the question, “What am I going to do with my life?” Professor David Cottrell, and director of the Music Industry Program at JMU usually said things how they were. He explained, “If you think you want to be an astronomer, but you never look at the stars, you’re probably not going to be an astronomer.” But what was I doing? Well, I was booking bands. Listening to awesome music. Oh. And assisting a wedding photographer.

I declined to come aboard for a second year in Admissions at JMU, and embarked on another year of education at Boston University’s Center for the Digital Imaging Arts. For something I had become obsessed with. PHOTOGRAPHY. Nine Months. 25 classes. We studied our cameras. Workflow. Photoshop. Composition. Printing. Lighting. Studio Lighting. Still life. Illustration. Studio Portraits. Location Portraits. Architecture. And after even more classes, we arrived at weddings. Joey Pulone was our awesome teacher and encouraged us with his imagery and jovial attitude. He introduced me to Jasmine Star and Sarah Rhoads, and re-aquainted me with Casey Templeton‘s work [a local Richmond Commercial Photographer, with whom I ended up interning with...]. All of these photographers have stellar branding and I was entranced.

Before I graduated from CDIA, I knew what I was going to do. Finally. I had an answer. I am so thankful for my time at CDIA for so many reasons. CDIA taught me so much about technicals. I learned the ins and outs of big studio lighting. We had instructors who are nationally and internationally renown and freely shared their knowledge and their “how-to’s” on some of their most beautiful shots. It gave me an opportunity to be around others who shared a passion for photography. I learned from them and was encouraged by them. CDIA shattered the plateau I was at in photography; not knowing how to get better or how to take a step to do so. It allowed me to play with equipment, some of which I’ll NEVER use or be able to afford, but I know how. I met friends I still keep in touch with and love. We all have such different interests, but we share a common bond. We take pictures.

I’m writing this blog post because, perhaps above photography, I love education. Learning has been a part of my life for more years than photography, and I may be addicted to “new” information. The “how-to.” But it makes me who I am as a person, as well as a photographer. I would not be a wedding photographer had it not been for my time at CDIA. Not sure where I would be… perhaps bouncing around New England with prospective JMUers, looking at Style Me Pretty on my breaks…

Uncertainty

“Uncertainty will always be part of the taking charge process”
~ Harold S. Geneen, CEO of ITT

“I don’t feel tired,” I said last night. It was well past my bed time. You know, 10:30. I think this whole move has got me questioning so much of who I am and what I am doing, its hard to remember to do things like sleep.

It’s hard to uproot. Even when I knew it was temporary. Winston Salem is our first home. This our the first kitchen. I made my first meal for my husband there. I have mixed emotions. Because I know I have a lot of work ahead of me. I have been a real slacker when it comes the “business” side of me. I need encouragement to get out there. Improve. Practice. Put my neck on the line. Fail. Succeed. I need to take charge. I guess none of us have a real clear idea of what the future holds. Sure, we all of expectations, but sometimes I get scared when I see things like this. But I need to push through for the purpose of the vision.

Joy + Terry | Northern Virginia Wedding

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Well, I think the heading is a little misleading. Joy and Terry were already married when they threw this reception. They had an absolutely BEAUTIFUL wedding in St. Lucia earlier in April, and came home to throw a big party with their closest friends and family! And what a party it was! There was so much dancing, especially with Mr. Scott West as the DJ [It was a pleasure working with you, sir!].

Joy works at Potomac Hospital, and Terry is the owner of a wonderful jewelry store in Occoquan, VA called Quinn’s. [Check it out, ladies... for real.] The two are so adorable together; like kids! They laugh and tease and play, but most of all, they smile. I don’t think I took but two photos of Joy not smiling. The evening at Harbor View was sprinkled with tropical decor and bright colors plus photos of their wedding.  Cheers to you lovebirds! Enjoy France…or Germany… whenever you go!

Stunning.

Cake: Cakes by Design [Debbie made my wedding cake! mmmm...]  Catering: R&R Catering [yum!!!]  And the ring. OH the ring. So beautiful…

Benny gave the gift of Hula to the couple. He is an amazing dancer…

Seriously. All smiles.

Jill Powers | Bridal Portrait Assistant

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

I found myself putting down my phone [aka GPS] and guessing that this picturesque grey stone farm house was where I was supposed to be. I knew I was right when I saw this beautiful blonde fly out the front door all done up to the nines. We started the afternoon with a tour around Grey Gables; and then the words “lets take the four wheeler” came out of her mouth. And, “We’ll just go slow,” is not an appropriate assumption when riding backseat to Jill, even though she had already had her hair done…

After visiting the dogs, chickens, the fields, and the cows, make-up came next. ”Yea! I’ll do make-up!” Although I am not a professional, it was my little excuse to tag along.

Finally, when the light was just right, a little VW pulled up into the driveway. Out pops a little red head. Katelyn, I have hair envy, FYI. And now, before you scroll at all, PLEASE do your eyes the favor of going over to Katelyn James Photography to see the real portraits. She is SUCH an amazing photographer, designer, and styler. And so generous. I’m so thankful she let me shoot some! Jill, I can’t believe how insanely beautiful you are. Congratulations on your wedding, and your marriage is in my prayers!

The Scotts | Washington DC Family Portraits

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

About just under two years ago, I met Adriann on my first day of CDIA. She and I had arrived SUPER early to class and we struck up conversation about where we were from, business, family… I learned she was from Stafford and was pregnant! [Can you imagine going to photography school everyday for nine months while making a baby?]

Anyway, we decided to ride together to class each day.  I love talking with her because the girl can’t say anything negative about anyone or anything. She hardly ever complains, and always looks for the good in people. But she is also honest. When you ask her how she is, she isn’t one to say, “Fine how are you?” She really makes you feel like you’re part of her life and important. I loved seeing Adriann grow in her work, and baby grow inside of mommy. I especially loved showing up at the hospital when baby Aubrie was born just under a year ago! How cute she was! So small and feisty…

I met Don soon after Adriann because he became “the driver” for us girls in to Washington DC. They are so perfect for each other, and I was so honored and excited to shoot their family portraits for Aubrie’s first birthday, which is in a few days! We went into the city and found some awesome light among a few rain clouds. Aubrie was a dream to photograph. She smiled BACK at you. So, as long as I smiled, she smiled. Amazing.
